SUSTAINABILITY ELEMENTS

Tenant Partnerships

LAWA is always excited to partner with our airport tenants on new sustainability projects and initiatives.

Through collaboration, LAWA and airport tenants can get a better understanding of each other’s sustainability needs, provide mutual support to help reach goals and targets, and share implementation successes and challenges.

Performance Summary

Almost 86,000 military personnel and their families visited the Bob Hope USO at LAX during 2015 and were provided with complimentary sandwiches, snacks, and beverages, along with amenities such as showers, nap rooms, high-speed internet, TV with a wide selection of DVDs and CD’s, and more.

Our Stories

LAX Sustainability Forum

On March 31st, 2015, the Environmental Programs Group held its first LAX Sustainability Forum where domestic and foreign airline carriers were invited to meet with staff to learn about LAWA’s sustainability initiatives in air quality, water conservation, energy conservation, solid waste reduction, noise management, green construction and social responsibility.

A panel, comprised of Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Federal Express, shared information about their environmental initiatives. United Airlines talked about their bio-fuel project and how 50% of their ground support equipment (GSE) at LAX use electric or alternative fuel. Fifty-seven percent of Delta’s GSE is electric-powered while 50% of Southwest Airlines’ GSE is electric-powered. The domestic carriers also said that they operate single-engine taxiing at LAX, when possible, to conserve fuel.

The Bob Hope United Service Organization (USO) at LAX

The Bob Hope United Service Organization (USO) at LAX, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is one of the few stand-alone USOs in the US and has our tenant partner for over six decades. The facility is located across from Terminal 2 adjacent to the iconic Theme Building and is open 24 hours, seven days a week to provide comfort and support for military personnel and their families during their stay at the airport. In 2015, LAWA employees held a toiletry collection drive and donated over 1,500 items to those visiting the facility. Another of our long-time tenant partner, Hudson Group, began a phone card donation program in early 2015. Hudson Group is the largest travel retailer in the US with several bookstores, newsstands, cafes, specialty retail, and duty-free retail stores at LAX. Guests were able to buy a phone card for donation to US troops at any of the Hudson Group stores at the register. Through Memorial Day of 2016, the program had donated over 22,000 phone cards, a value of almost $275,000, to military personnel, who are able to use the cards to call home from anywhere in the world at no charge. There is also a Bob Hope USO facility at LA/Ontario International Airport, Palm Springs International Airport, and John Wayne Airport.
