Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) terminal vertical cores are new structures that are integrated into the airport’s terminals to provide connections for pedestrian walkways between the Automated People Mover stations within the Central Terminal Area and the terminals they serve. Additionally, these structures also offer space that can be used for offices, baggage claims, restrooms, airport lounges or other uses as determined by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and its partners.
The terminal vertical cores are being delivered by LAWA and its airline partners.
LAWA delivered the cores serving Terminals 5 & 6 ("Terminal 5.5"), Terminal 7, and the Tom Bradley International Terminal. These projects collectively received an "Award of Merit" from Engineering News Record in 2024, and Terminal 5.5 received the "Outstanding Airport Project Award" from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2023.
Cores serving the Terminal 1 Extension, Terminals 2 & 3, and Terminals 4 & 5 ("Terminal 4.5") were delivered as part of new construction and renovations led by Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, respectively.
