The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project will focus on airfield, terminal and landside roadway) improvements, while staying within the airport’s existing footprint. The Project will elevate the passenger experience, enhance safety and increase b usiness opportunities.
Airfield Improvements
- Improves runway exit configurations to enhance pilot visibility
- Extends Taxiway D westerly for operational efficiency and to meet updated FAA Standards
- Improves Taxiways C & D for access to new concourse and terminal facilities
- Increases overall operational efficiency which reduces delays and enhances safety
Terminal Improvements:
- Development of Terminal 9 (T9) - 12 gate facility (12 new gates)
- Development of Concourse 0 (C0) - 11 gate facility (9 new gates)
– Maintains curbside and passenger processing at Terminal 1 - Replaces west remote gates
- Provides full-service international capabilities
- Accesses the new Automated People Mover train station from Concourse 0
- Provides for a new Automated People Mover (APM) train station near Terminal 9 and also a pedestrian corridor over Sepulveda Boulevard from Terminal 9 to Terminal 8
- Provides a better guest experience (extra seating, check-in areas, security screening, charging stations, etc.) along with additional concessions (restaurants and shops) and
Landside Improvements:
- Improves access to and from the Central Terminal Area, and provides access to the new Terminal 9, with new elevated roadways
- Reduces congestion on nearby public roads and neighborhood streets
- Enhances access to Intermodal Transportation Facility West (ITF West)
- Adds a new Automated People Mover train station at Terminal 9 which will link to regional mass transit
The Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project is replacing outdated and inconvenient West Remote Gates with more convenient, passenger-friendly gates at a new Concourse 0 and Terminal 9. These gates will help reduce delays, increase the efficiency of operations at the airport and improve the overall traveler experience at LAX. With these improvements, a reduction in aircraft waiting time on the tarmac will create less aircraft idling and decrease emissions. The project also promotes sustainable practices with a minimum LEED Silver Certification. Area traffic congestion in neighborhood streets will also be reduced and the connection to the new Automated People Mover will further decrease vehicle emissions around the airport.
Traffic is driven by population growth and a thriving economy. Los Angeles will continue to face challenges of congestion, regardless of airport improvements. The replacement of gates that are part of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project are designed to accommodate anticipated increased population and activity in Los Angeles with a higher level of service and efficiency. Through the Landside Access Modernization Project (LAMP), LAWA will implement several projects that will provide alternative means to access the airport and reduce congestion on local streets. These include a new APM train, a connection between the APM train and the Metro regional rail system at Metro’s new Airport Metro Connector station, a Consolidated Rental Car facility, which will eliminate shuttles from local streets and the Central Terminal Area, and other roadway system enhancements. As part of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project, LAWA will make further improvements to the roadway network serving LAX, providing improved roadways to access the Central Terminal Area as well as enhancing access to the Intermodal Transportation Facility West facility in order to encourage use of the new APM train.
All airports in the region are expected to experience growth over the next 20+ years and many are planning for this growth through various modernization projects. Through the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project, LAWA is doing its part to accommodate the growth that will come to LAX in a manner that increases airfield efficiency, optimizes LAX’s existing footprint, improves the traveling experience for passengers, and helps to alleviate traffic congestion in neighboring communities.
The Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project will impact the future of the APM train by providing access to the new system from Concourse 0, and by creating a new APM station near Terminal 9 with access provided by a pedestrian walkway to the station. The new APM train station will improve access to LAX as well as increase access to regional public transit.
LAWA has typically undertaken the financing of such improvements and recovered the cost from airlines using the facilities. LAWA will continue to evaluate all financing options, including those where airlines or other parties participate directly in the financing of improvements, in order to identify the most cost-effective approach for the airport.
