LAWA has several channels to communicate with the passengers and the public during an emergency. Examples include a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA), direct instructions from first responders, terminal public address systems, emergency visual message displays, and our official Twitter accounts. The type, size, and impacts determine which communications channels are used during an emergency.

LAWA has a list of incidents and defined thresholds which will trigger a LAWA Alert. Examples include but not limited to the following:

  • Aircraft Emergency
  • AOA Restriction or Closure
  • Baggage System Outage
  • Conveyance Disruption
  • Lighting Detection
  • Power Failure
  • Terminal Evacuations
  • Traffic Delays
  • Weather Advisories

Yes! You can also receive alerts and manage your settings by installing the Everbridge Mobile App.

A badge holder chooses to sign up for LAWA Alerts to stay informed about what's happening at LAX, VNY, and the surrounding communities. Public safety officials at the local, state and federal level use the WEA system to push a message to a person's mobile device because of an imminent threat or danger, AMBER Alert, or Presidential alert. LAWA has been approved by FEMA to send WEA messages during an airport emergency which causes a threat to life, property, or the environment. An individual does not sign up to receive a WEA message. To learn more about WEA, please see FEMA’s program FAQ at this link.
