Runway 6L-24R Long Term Closure for the North Airfield Exit Taxiways Project
September 12, 2023 - January 09, 2024
Project Overview:
The North Airfield Exit Taxiways (NAET) Project that will construct 4 new runway exit taxiways between Runway 6L-24R and Taxiway E will begin the Phase 3 Runway 6L-24R long term 119-day continuous closure starting on Tuesday September 12, 2023 at 0030 PDT. Estimated reopening of Runway 6L-24R is January 09, 2024.
Runway 6R-24L will remain open and available during the majority of the Phase 3 Runway 6L-24R construction except for nightly Runway 6R-24L closures required at the start of the Phase 3 construction and again at the end of the Phase 3 construction prior to reopening Runway 6L-24R.
The Phase 2 construction on Taxiway E between Taxiways L and E10 that began on Saturday May 27, 2023 was originally planned to be completed and reopened at the end of August 2023, but it is now delayed due to unforseen issues that LAWA staff are working diligently to resolve. The reopening of Taxiway E Phase 2 is estimated by the first week of October 2023.
Operational Impacts:
The Phase 3 Runway 6L-24R long term 119-day continuous closure will displace some arrivals and departures to the south complex runways to balance traffic flow and demand.
Expect 4 to 5 Nightly Runway 24L closures along with the Phase 3 Runway 24R closure during the first week 9-12-2023 through 9-16-2023, which will require all arrivals and departures via the south complex. Expect similar nightly closures the first week of January 2024 to prepare for the reopening of Runway 6L-24R.
The Taxiway E closure for Phase 2 of the NAET Project will impact available taxi routes for ADG VI aircraft (A388 and B747-8) that operate at LAX. Airlines operating ADG VI aircraft at LAX can expect FAA Air Traffic Control to route the aircraft to arrive and depart runways that accommodate the ADG VI aircraft, and that allow for the aircraft to access an available ADG VI taxiway. FAA LAX Air Traffic Control Tower may provide pilots of ADG VI aircraft instructions to back taxi on a runway to route the aircraft around the taxiway closures when necessary.
The Taxiway E closure for Phase 2 may result in congestion and possible delays for aircraft taxiing on the north airfield complex because Taxiway D between Taxiways K and D10 will be the only taxiway available to transition east to west for aircraft taxiing to the northeast TBIT Terminal gates, Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and for aircraft taxiing to or from the north complex runways.
The Taxiway E closure for Phase 2 of the NAET Project will also impact the Over Ocean arrival configuration at night due to the limited ADG VI available taxi routes while Taxiway E is closed in this segment, requiring LAX to remain in the West Traffic configuration at night until Taxiway E Phase 2 area is reopened.
For planning purposes for airlines that operate ADG VI at LAX, Runway 25L will be closed nightly Monday – Friday (0030-0630L) every other week for rubber removal and maintenance activities. When Runway 25L is closed nightly, Runway 24L is the only other runway available for A388 aircraft departures. Please review the most current version of the ADG VI Ops plan for available ADG VI runways and taxiways: LAWA Official Site | Group VI Plan
Below is the planned schedule of the Phase 3 runway closure sequence (Note: these dates are subject to change based on construction needs or weather delays):
Phase 3 Runway 6L-24R Continuous Closure September 12, 2023 (0030 PDT) – January 09, 2024.
Phase 3B Runway 6R-24L Nightly Closures September 12, 2023 – September 16, 2023 (0030-0630 PDT).
Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) have been issued for the scheduled closures. Please plan flight operations accordingly and check current NOTAMs at https://notams.aim.faa.gov/notamSearch for current airfield operating conditions.
