November 14 & 15
Terminal 7
The Greek Rebetiko Trio present a modern twist on the traditional art form of Rebetiko music that has developed in Greece for over a century. Often referred to as the “Greek Blues,” Rebetiko music traces its roots to the late Ottoman Empire and references customs, practices, and artistic expressions of the urban lower and working-class populations. With an authentic repertoire of this Greek folk music, told through the idioms of Rebetiko and its musical successor Laiko, musicians Dimitris Mann, Taso Comanescu, and Eirini Nomikou have captivated audiences since their founding eight years ago. The group has performed over 150 shows in festivals, concert halls, and live venues, from the Montana Folk Festival to the Friar’s Club in New York and have garnered acclaim throughout.
The trio’s founder, Dimitris Mann, is a composer, sound designer and multi-instrumentalist from Mykonos Island, Greece, now based in Los Angeles. American guitarist Taso Comanescu is a colorful performer full of subtle nuance and strong musicianship. The group’s newest member, Erini Nomikou, is a passionate singer-songwriter born in Athens, Greece.
