Artist: Erin Miller Wray
Terminal 1, Departures Level, Connecting Hallway
Pulling inspiration from the natural patterns and hues found in the aerial views seen from an airplane window, Erin Miller Wray creates a bold, modern mural that explores the emotional effects of oversized shapes and energetic colors. Erin reflects on the moment of pause that often occurs when traveling on a plane, when we realize how small we are on this miraculous planet. The massive row of randomized arches, tilted lines, and changing color schemes are meant to mirror designs seen in the landscape while flying above Earth. Up close you are surrounded by a single color, but a step back reveals positive and negative space within the shapes, altering the scale of the design and creating a sense of vastness. This reveal is meant to instill a feeling of awe and a moment of reflection as we ponder our place in the world.
Erin Miller Wray is a Los Angeles–based artist, designer, and brand collaborator known for her vivid designs for everything from apparel and surfboards to basketball courts, buses, and buildings. Her style — colorful, geometric, energetic — is embracing and joyful. A lifelong athlete and a parent, Erin is on a mission to “get people up and out and together” by merging art and athletics. Among her proudest accomplishments are her public art installations for communities and schools throughout the U.S. Through her exploration of shapes and colors in both public and private art, she hopes to enhance the well-being of community members by sharing and preserving stories and encouraging audiences to explore creativity, possibility, healthy lifestyles, and engagement with others.
